At a young age I discovered genealogy. I was greatly inspired by two women from different branches of my family – a great aunt, and my father’s first cousin. These women both helped me get started in creating my first hand-drawn family tree. And even over many decades, they continued to share new findings with me.

A place for remembrance

This wasn’t so much a spiritual undertaking, at least, not outwardly. No one mentioned the phrase, “ancestor reverence,” and no one discussed it in terms of it being a spiritual practice. However, small areas of shelves were set aside with mementoes. Candles were regularly lit next to loved ones’ photos. And bud vases were placed nearby with fresh flowers. These were special little areas of a home that clearly reflected warmth and love, as well as remembrance.

The need for ancestor reverence is, I think, quite natural to us. It’s only natural to keep our loved ones in our hearts long after they have passed. We note their anniversaries, acknowledge the years we have been without them, and think of them through our challenges and celebrations. These little areas of a home serve the purpose of focusing those feelings, and for taking brief moments to send out our love to our loved ones.

Going further back

Ancestor reverence goes a little beyond keeping those we knew in life in our hearts, or lighting a candle to them on each anniversary of their passing. It tends to include even those who came before those we knew in life. It’s an honoring of great-grandparents who in many cases lived years before we were ever born. And it’s an honoring of even those who lived many generations back.

Finding meaning, and myself, in a family tree

My own involvement in genealogy brought me to this sense of it being ancestor reverence, simply because there I was as a young teenager, digging deep into my family history and finding real meaning. I was uncovering truths about my heritage that even my dad hadn’t known. I was discovering things about people I’d never heard of but who I knew I was descended from. It all felt very big, and very significant. These were people who had through living their lives, led to mine. I didn’t know them, but I felt the connection to them that was already naturally there.

Cultural traditions of ancestor reverence

Many religious traditions across cultures have practiced ancestor reverence, some perhaps a bit more obviously than others. Ancestor reverence has changed a lot of course – often with Christian or other religious expansion. It has been somewhat dissolved into other holidays or celebrations. It is most often still found (or more obviously found), in indigenous spiritual traditions that have lived on.

November days of remembrance

November seems an apt time to think about ancestor reverence. We have just celebrated Halloween, a time some believe presents a thinning of a veil between worlds. It is also the time of Dia de los Muertos and All Souls’ Day. For me personally, it is also the month when my mother died, fifty years ago this week. And thus, it has always been a month of deeper reflection on and closeness to those we have lost.

Catholic, pagan, other…!

My own spirituality tends to involve a lot from the faith I grew up in, a lot from family practices, and a lot from my own exploration and education. I have found over the years that much of what I seem to inherently believe, was ingrained from what I learned as a very young child at church. But I also have within me a sense of other, of truths or realities not taught in church. These are evidenced through experience, or shared with me by close family members.

The practice of ancestor reverence to me then, is sometimes as simple as a smile and an “I love you” or an “I miss you” to my mom or dad. Sometimes it’s hours spent combing through some new genealogical finds. And sometimes it’s a spot in my home set up to intentionally honor those who have gone before. It doesn’t have to be showy, it doesn’t have to even be material. It can be truly just in our hearts, or a thought or prayer. Of course, it can be something we consider an ancestor altar, but a lot of people are uncomfortable with such titles. My grandmother and her sisters would never have considered their lit votives as altars. They likely would have thought calling it that was a kind of sacrilege!

It doesn’t matter what we call it. Feeling called to honor our connection to our ancestors, in my opinion, is natural and spiritually healthy. It can be fulfilling, and help us process loss and grief, learn about ourselves, and honor our past as well as who we are in the present.

New to this?

A larger and more intentional selection of photos and mementoes dedicated to honoring my and my husband’s ancestors ~ this one is from years ago, and was set up at Halloween time.

Here are a few ideas if you are completely new to this. It doesn’t have to be a big undertaking. Choosing a single picture, or a note, piece of jewelry, ticket stub, any kind of memento, is a good way to start. Set aside just a small space where you can center that small memento, where you can focus a little sincere attention. Votives are nice, but if you don’t use candles, they’re not necessary at all, or you could use a flameless candle. I mentioned a bud vase above. Flowers are lovely, but it could instead be something like a favorite brand of cigarette, or a shot glass of whisky. If that’s edging towards too weird for you, then keep it to just a picture or that little memento. I think over time it will feel less weird to add to it.

This is obviously in remembering a single loved one, but as you get comfortable with it, you can expand the practice to include other photos or mementoes, items that would have meaning to either specific people in your family tree, or be significant culturally. For example, I do have a good number of mementoes, but to honor my background more broadly, or if I wanted this to appear a little less obviously an ancestor altar to the casual visitor, I could include something that honored my Polish, Italian, or other ethnic heritage (I’m basically a mutt descended from a bunch of different backgrounds, so my options are myriad!). I could include an embroidered scarf from Poland, for example, or a ceramic rooster figurine from Italy.

Reverence or worship?

I don’t worship my ancestors. I’m not even at a point in my life where I feel I exactly worship anyone or anything in particular. To me, those who have gone before us are just that – they are loved ones who have lived before us, other people who had human lives, human failings, and human strengths. Just like us. Hopefully, they are somewhere in spirit now. But I can’t imagine anyone worshipping my spirit or my memory once I’m gone.

This also isn’t in itself religious, at least, not for me. There is a spiritual aspect to it, of course. I consider it part of my spirituality. My early religious education included some ancestor reverence, it was understood; and my journey through alternative religious paths has also very much included it. But it isn’t the core of my spirituality.

Shared experiences

I would love to know how you honor your ancestors or loved ones, whether it is important to you or even a part of your spiritual life at all. Please feel free to reach out!

You might be interested in my article An Ancestral Call, that delves a little into how ancestry has played a role in my pursuit of tarot.
